Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
