The Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Changes Images of Women to Virtually Undress Them

AI Picture Alteration Issue

Elon Musk's social media platform X has provoked widespread outrage after individuals utilized its AI chatbot Grok to manipulate pictures of females by taking off their clothing.

Multiple instances have surfaced where the system has been used to virtually strip women to make them appear in swimwear without permission, as well as to place them in inappropriate scenarios.

Developer Reaction and Legal Stance

XAI, the firm that created Grok, did not respond to questions, except for an automatically-generated response stating "legacy media lies".

A Home Office representative stated that legislation is being introduced to ban nudification tools. Under a upcoming criminal offence, anyone who distributed such tools would "face a prison sentence and heavy penalties".

"The platform is capable of halting these forms of abuse if they chose to," said Clare McGlynn, adding they "appear to enjoy impunity."

Regulator Position and Platform Functionality

The regulator Ofcom said tech firms must "assess the danger" of people accessing illegal content on their platforms, but did not confirm whether it was currently investigating X or Grok in relation to AI-generated images.

Grok is a free artificial intelligence—with some paid-for functions—which answers X users' queries when they tag it in a message.

It is commonly used to provide reactions or further context to other users' remarks, but people on X are also can edit an uploaded image through its AI image editing tool.

History of Controversy and Rules

The system has been faulted for permitting users to generate pictures and videos with nudity and sexualised content, and it was previously accused of generating graphic material of public figures.

"X has been permitting the generation and spread of these images for a long time without taking any measures and we have not witnessed any challenge by oversight bodies," the expert added.

XAI's own terms of service prohibits "showing images of individuals in a sexually explicit manner".

In a statement, Ofcom said it was against the law to "create or share non-consensual intimate images or child sexual abuse material" and confirmed this covered explicit AI images created with AI.

It said services such as X were mandated to take "necessary measures" to "minimize the danger" of users encountering unlawful content on their platforms and to remove it swiftly when they become aware of it.
