A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
